Threads to the Past is the story of traditions of embroidery in western Russia and eastern Europe and its long-time connection to the sacred; from the pre-Christian goddess motifs that adorned the traditional ritual cloths and peasant costumes of the region, to its contemporary expressions in specially-embroidered Easter-basket covers, icon covers and sacred images of the patron saints.
Through interviews with more than half a dozen embroidery artists, collectors and academic experts, the program examines the personal and family histories of several artists and points to the persistenece of certain design motifs, present in Neolithic times, when anthropologists believe the people of the region worshipped a Goddess-Protectress called 'Berehinia.'
Beautiful embroidery work of the present and past are on display throughout in original work by artists Eniko Farkas of Ithaca, NY and Elizabeth Capozzi, Lydia Werbizky and Cheryl Dutko of the Binghamton area, and antique pieces from the Ukrainian Museum, the Cleveland and Brooklyn Museums and the Baine-Cincebeaux collection of Slovak Folkdress and Folk art.
Researchers Mary B. Kelly of Tompkins Cortland Community College, author of The Goddess Embroideries of Eastern Europe, Lubow Wolynetz, curator of the Ukrainian Museum, and Peter Voorheis, staff folklorist of ARTS of the Southern Fingerlakes, provide the historical framework for the program, helping to interpret the imagery and various traditions.
Threads to the Past emerges as a testimony to the importance of the art of embroidery to the cultures of Eastern Europe and its deep connection even today to the very roots of human spirituality in this region.
